The Port of Mesaieed

The Port of Mesaieed was initially selected to export the crude oil produced from the onshore Dukhan field due to its accessibility to a natural channel and relatively deep water. First crude oil was exported in December 1949 from two CBM berths. Further industrialization followed by the production of other petroleum products and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for export.

 

The first industry to set up in Mesaieed was NODCO (1968) to operate the Mesaieed Refinery to meet local requirements of gasoline and diesel and export of surplus to world markets. QAFCO followed in 1974 producing fertilizer products such as urea and ammonia. QASCO steel mill inaugurated in 1978 marked the start of non-hydrocarbon commercial activities and imported iron ore for the production of steel products. QAPCO was established in 1981 for the production of ethylene and low-density polyethylene. Additional oil and gas related industries such as QAFAC (1998) and QVC (1999) followed.

 

The port also contains two ship-repair and fabrication yards for dry-docking and repairing and manufacturing all types of marine units. The fabrication yards serve the construction needs of the oil and gas industries.

 

Mesaieed Port has advanced steadily over the years to service the needs of the industries and has grown from a relatively small crude oil export terminal into a world-class port handling a wide range of petroleum products as well as an important commercial port.

 

The Port Operations Department of MIC provides a range of services to the users of Mesaieed Port. These include pilotage of all vessels as specified in port regulations, Vessel Traffic Control using sophisticated VTS equipment and marine services such as harbour crafts and crew. The Department is the sole Agent for all hydrocarbon vessels. Other services comprise of maintenance/inspection of all berths and oil pollution combating & control. The Department as the Port Authority regulates marine activity for a safe, smooth and efficient clearing of shipping throughout the designated port area as required by National and International Regulations.
